As a mom, one of the biggest challenges we face is taking the time to take care of ourselves. We are not super hero’s as my husband likes to remind me. Our lives are busy, hectic and messy with children. We love them to the moon and back. So let’s take a moment for ourselves. It’s time to refresh in the new year.
Each week I plan to highlight a local business that will help you find time to relax and take care of you. These will be great for expectant moms, new moms or seasoned moms. These are all local businesses that I have made connections with in our community to help you realize the amazing services out there to help you be or not be super mom. Be sure to check in weekly because they are all incredible and different.
This week I am highlighting Julia of An Integrated Life, LLC. I asked her to explain what An Integrated Life is. She told me, "there are two components to An Integrated Life.
I specialize in pediatric development and have worked as a Pediatric Occupational Therapist for 12 years. As a mother of two boys, I love working with moms and mothers-to-be. The Feldenkrais Method has been a huge part of my life as a woman and mother. During pregnancy, it helped relieve pregnancy-related pain and improved my childbirth experience. Daily, self-awareness that the Feldenkrais Method instils, helps decrease my stress and prevents aches & pains. As an Occupational Therapist, I am able to bill insurance for Feldenkrais sessions."
Since I work with a lot of new and expecting moms I wanted to know how her business is helpful to them. Julia said, "Feldenkrais sessions are like a "massage" for the Nervous System...they are relaxing but on a deeper level. The sessions revolve around a movement pattern and are performed while lying clothed on a table along with sitting, kneeling, and/or walking. Most people express feeling "lighter," "taller," and "more grounded" after the session. Feldenkrais sessions align the body for improving body mechanics and decreasing pain. Any parent can benefit from the Method's effects of decreasing stress and increasing self-awareness for an improved sense of self. The Feldenkrais Method is wonderful in decreasing pregnancy related injuries or pain. It can also improve alignment of the baby in utero and increase ease in childbirth."
What should the readers know about your industry? Julia said, "in the fitness & rehab worlds, connection between the mind and the body is finally becoming more recognized. As a "Somatic" approach with deep roots in the Martial Arts, the Feldenkrais Method utilizes the importance of the Mind-Body Connection. You cannot focus on one piece of the body while ignoring the whole. With self-awareness & mindfulness, the Feldenkrais Method teaches people to use their whole self for more strength, efficiency, and ease. Whether you are a child or parent, the approach is very empowering and enlightening."
She would also like you to know, "I have extensive background in Pediatric eating/feeding difficulties and disorders, including oral-motor/mechanical, sensory, and "picky" eating. I believe that Nutrition is the background for a healthy body and nervous system. Using an integrated approach, I love addressing eating and Sensory Processing differences in the home and community environments."
Also Julia has a great series coming up. She has a 4-week series of sessions for Feldenkrais in Pregnancy called "Mama Moves" coming up April 8, 15, 22, 29 at Luna Chiropractic. You should check it out!
